	Mona Filip is a contemporary art curator and writer based in Calgary. Displacement and adaptation are core concerns of her curatorial investigations, informed by personal experiences of immigration and diasporic living. Bringing together a range of perspectives on collective memory, place and belonging, her projects examine the relationship between the personal and the political, ways of rewriting and redressing histories, museum restitution and repair, storytelling as world-building.&#38;nbsp;

	Originally from Bucharest, Romania, Filip received her BFA from the Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC, and her MFA from SUNY at Buffalo. &#38;nbsp;Filip’s curatorial experience spans more than forty exhibitions and site-specific projects, collaborations with guest curators, a broad range of public programs, and innovative educational initiatives. Over two decades, Filip developed critical visual art programs&#38;nbsp; supporting the production of new works,&#38;nbsp; introducing national and international artists to Toronto with first local exhibitions, and&#38;nbsp; positioning both gallery spaces and urban sites as forums to generate critical, cross-cultural discussions on global concerns. She is currently Chief Curator at Contemporary Calgary.
With an idea-driven and dialogue-focused approach, Filip collaborates with artists to produce experiential installations that transform the familiar white cube, meaningfully respond to unconventional environments, and engage the public on sensorial, emotional and intellectual levels. Throughout her work, she fosters innovation within artistic practices and exchange of ideas across disciplines.&#38;nbsp;

A member of Curve Lake First Nation and citizen of the Nishnaabeg Nation, artist Olivia Whetung draws upon her experience working on and with the land to create artworks that speak of the interdependence and relationality within our ecosystem.Researching land-based and food de-commodifying movements, Anishinaabe knowledge, and the ecology of her home territory, Whetung has produced a series of sculptural installations, digital prints, and three-dimensional beadworks that articulate the vital connectivity between woodland, wetland, and garden environments. The artist’s first-hand observations are nourished by a critical understanding of Western agricultural models and natural science methodologies as detrimental to the ecologies of Southern Ontario, where they have caused massive environmental destruction. Western worldviews, brought over by European settlers, treat only cleared farmland as “productive” while deeming woodland and wetland unmanageable and useless. These outlooks centre human needs and desires at the expense of the ecosystem’s survival.

Whetung’s poignant works solicit our attention and reconsideration of spaces and species that are crucial to biodiversity and to sustainable food production. Tenderly foregrounding our more-than-human neighbours, they remind us that we are not the only ones to benefit from the land’s gifts, nor to suffer from ecological ruin. The exhibition’s Anishinaabemowin title, inawendiwok, loosely translates as “they are related to each other,” emphasizing the ways in which coexistence within the ecosystem is mutually linked. With human yearning for endlessly available resources and sanitized nature comes devastating loss. Only through a renewed understanding of kinship and gratitude may we restore an ecology based on responsibility and reciprocity that can sustain the future.

	Artist InfoOlivia Whetung is a member of Curve Lake First Nation and a citizen of the Nishnaabeg Nation. Her work has been the focus of solo exhibitions at Gallery 44, Toronto (2018); Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Kelowna (2018); Artspace, Peterborough (2017); and 180 Projects, Sault Ste. Marie. She has contributed to two-person and group exhibitions at Queen’s University, Kingston (2019); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas (2018-19); Textile Museum of Canada, Toronto (2018); Art Gallery of Mississauga (2018); Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottawa (2017); Access Gallery, Vancouver (2016); Western Front, Vancouver (2016); VIVO Media Arts Centre, Vancouver (2016); Open Space, Victoria (2014); and many others. She completed her BFA with a minor in Anishinaabemowin at Algoma University (2013) and her MFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia (2016). She was awarded the John Hartman Award in 2018, the William and Meredith Saunderson Prize for Emerging Artists in 2016, and is a recipient of a CGS-M Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Award and an Aboriginal Graduate Fellowship. In 2019 she was awarded a Joseph S. Stauffer Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Caroline Monnet’s first exhibition in a Toronto public gallery comprises a survey of her prolific production, centering on a new series of sculptures exploring language reclamation and intergenerational transmission. The title, Pizandawatc, comes from the traditional name of Monnet’s family before surnames were changed in Kitigan Zibi by the Oblates. Meaning “the one who listens” in Anishinaabemowin, the title also honours the artist’s great-grandmother, Mani Pizandawatc, who was the first in her family to have her territory divided into reserves. Exploring the notion of territory from the perspective of cultural attachment and ancestral memory, the exhibition articulates new visions that harken both to Indigenous legacies and futures.

The new body of work in Pizandawatc continues Monnet’s considerations of sculpture and sound as linked to temporality, orality, and knowledge sharing. Driven by an impulse to materialize language into durable physical form in order to preserve it, Monnet attempts to counter the ephemeral nature of the spoken word and to reclaim the Anishinaabe language by recording its soundwaves in layered native and industrial wood. Additional bronze elements capture shapes of weathered wood naturally modified by experience on the terrain, gesturing to matter and the elements. Evoking the relationship of speech to the land and how the Anishinaabeg traditionally named the land, these works examine the influence of topography on the rhythms of languages and cultures, envisioning the territory as a living form of knowledge transfer over generations. Each piece depicts a different phrase encapsulating the power of nature and the passage of time.

Presenting a range of new and older works relating to ideas engaged in the new series, Pizandawatc offers a comprehensive view of Monnet’s complex aesthetic vocabulary, polyvalent material dexterity, and cohesive conceptual investigation. Combining the visual vocabulary of Anishinaabe cultures with industrial materials, Monnet’s sculptures, mixed media works, videos, and installations expand on the centrality of the land and its resources in Anishinaabe spirituality, history, and resilience.

	Artist Info Caroline Monnet (Anishinaabe/French) is a multidisciplinary artist from Outaouais, Québec. She studied Sociology and Communication at the University of Ottawa (Canada) and the University of Granada (Spain) before pursuing a career in visual arts and film. Her work has been featured at the Whitney Biennial (NYC), Toronto Biennal of Art, KØS museum (Copenhagen), Museum of Contemporary Art (Montréal), the National Art Gallery (Ottawa). Solo exhibitions include Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Arsenal Contemporary (NYC) and Centre d’art international de Vassivière (France). Her work is included in numerous collections in North America as well as the permanent UNESCO collection in Paris. Her films have been extensively programmed at international film festivals including TIFF and Sundance. In 2016, she was selected for the Cannes Festival Cinéfondation residency in Paris. Monnet is recipient of the 2020 Pierre-Ayot award and the Merata Mita Fellowship of the Sundance Institute, and she was recently named Compagne des arts et des lettres du Québec. She is based in Montréal and is represented by Blouin-Division Gallery.

In this first
exhibition in his home province of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton born, Toronto based
artist Sameer Farooq presents a new installation that offers a deeply poetic
space to reflect on the fraught and violent histories of art and anthropological
museums, their colonial origins, structures, and impulses.


With The Fairest Order in the World, Farooq probes
notions of provenance, repatriation, and repair, composing a series of new and
recent sculptures and images to articulate unique ideas for repurposing the
emptied spaces of museums devoid of their spoils. Mining the possibilities
offered by sustained engagement, Farooq invites us to envision what the museum
might become through the mechanics of restitution, what it may shift to collect
and document, and what kind of experiences it could nurture.

	The installation
elicits prolonged attention, asking visitors to look intently and to spend time
with the objects, contemplating their physical and emotional presence as well
as the absences they evoke. The artworks may serve as tools for meditation,
revealing a deeper potential that transcends their aesthetic value. An audio
environment composed by Farooq's collaborator Gabie Strong (Los Angeles, CA) sets
a deliberately slow pace, encouraging six-minute intervals at each vantage
point. Lyrical texts contributed by poet Jared Stanley (Reno, NV) unsettle the
rigid format of institutional labels and imagine the objects' own voices.
Farooq’s film produced in collaboration with Mirjam Linschooten (Amsterdam, NL), The Museum Visits a Therapist, offers
a reflection on trauma and recovery, personifying the museum and imagining
therapeutic strategies for healing historic wounds.


The exhibition
takes its title from a text fragment of Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus:
"The fairest order in the world is a heap of random sweepings." Contained
in this duality of opposites is the idea that the most organized and just attempt
at a universal order is equally as flawed or filled with balance and beauty as
an arbitrary pile of refuse. Considering this paradox, Farooq's meticulously choreographed
assembly invites us to interrogate our relationship with art objects and museum
displays, as well as the ordering narratives they uphold.

	Artist InfoSameer Farooq is a Canadian artist of Pakistani and Ugandan Indian descent. With a versatile approach that shifts between sculpture, photography, documentary film, and anthropological methods, he investigates strategies of representation to expand the ways through which museums have looked at the past through traditional forms of collection, interpretation and display. Farooq foregrounds community-based models of knowledge production and an array of contemplative practices in order to suggest new ways of narrating our cultural histories. He is an alumni of the prestigious Bemis Center Residency and has been longlisted for the Sobey Art Award (2024, 2019, 2018 and 2017). The stories we tell about the world – how it came to be, what forces
influence its course, and what our place is in its ecosystem – articulate who
we are as much as who we could be. Passed on through many generations, these
beliefs, legends or parables never belong to the past; their teachings continue
their work in the present as they keep showing us how we can forge boundless
paths forward, constantly rebuilding the world. Even if sometimes forgotten and
lost, they linger in our inherited subconscious and may be recalled intuitively
through our receptive bodies.

Let me
take you there is an exhibition that brings together a group
of Canadian artists whose practices draw upon ancestral histories and
knowledge accessed through oral traditions, folklore, spiritual practices and
embodied awareness, to envision possible futures. Inspired by cultural stories
of creation, transformation and rebirth, as well as instinctively conceived
rituals of empathy and repair, these artists propose new ways of being in
community and a rethinking of social and natural systems, interpersonal
relations, and beyond-human connections. Through their work, they extend an
invitation to collectively dream the world anew.

To a certain extent, every self is performative – a cast of characters we can summon or shape to serve our needs as we face the world. We each contain potential multitudes that can express or withhold different sides of ourselves, adapt to specific contexts, determine or respond to a boundless range of human interactions, surmount or succumb to inner drives and outside pressures.

	Navigating the complexities of selfhood, agency and representation, this exhibition brings together a group of artists who create and embody imaginative alter egos to examine, perform and subvert identity constructs and politics. Transforming their own appearance and staging complex photographic, video, and mixed media scenes, they disrupt and expose prejudices with regards to gender, race, ethnicity and nationhood. 

Informed by personal and collective histories entwined within the artists’ life experiences, their counter/selves advance divergent perspectives that undercut deceptive national narratives, cultural legacies and social expectations. Audacious or enigmatic, probing power structures, asserting belonging, or obscuring presence, the counter/selves reclaim space, protect the vulnerable, and reveal the fallacies of dominant discourses, counteracting their harmful sways. In all their incarnations, they epitomize resilience, resistance and renewal.

A Heap of Random Sweepings is an immersive installation of new and recent sculptural, photo and print works choreographed as a deeply poetic reflection on the fraught and violent histories of encyclopaedic museum collections, their colonial origins, structures and impulses.

With a versatile approach that may combine or shift between visual art processes, documentary filmmaking and writing as well as anthropological methods, Farooq investigates strategies of representation to supplant the injustices and inadequacies museums have historically perpetuated through traditional forms of collection, interpretation and display. He foregrounds community-based models of participation and knowledge production, proposing counter-archives, new additions to a collection, or buried histories made visible, in order to offset how dominant institutions speak about our cultural histories and our lives. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

	In A Heap of Random Sweepings, Farooq creates a series of displays that elicit prolonged attention, asking us to look intently and to spend time in the presence of these artworks as well as the absences they evoke. Raising questions about provenance and repatriation, the objects and images assembled in this installation articulate new visions that repurpose the emptied spaces of museums devoid of their spoils.  The installation’s physical arrangement changes periodically throughout the run of the show, emphasizing the fluidity of thought necessary for shifting entrenched practices. Submerged in an audio environment composed by Farooq’s collaborator, Gabie Strong (Los Angeles, CA), the artworks offer themselves as tools for meditation and self-reflection. Lyric captions contributed by poet Jared Stanley (Reno, NV) unsettle the rigidly prescribed narratives of didactic labels. The assembly guides us to interrogate our relationship with art objects and to ponder on an intrinsic potential that transcends their aesthetic value. Considering the possibilities offered by sustained contemplation and engagement, Farooq invites visitors to envision what a museum might become through the mechanics of restitution, what it may shift to collect and document, and what kind of experiences it could nurture.

	Artist InfoSameer Farooq is a Canadian artist of Pakistani and Ugandan Indian descent. His interdisciplinary practice investigates tactics of representation and enlists the tools of sculpture, installation, photography, documentary filmmaking, writing and the methods of anthropology to explore various forms of collecting, interpreting, and display. The result is often a collaborative work which counterbalances how dominant institutions speak about our lives: a counter-archive, new additions to a museum collection, or a buried history made visible. With exhibitions at institutions around the world including the Aga Khan Museum (Toronto), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), The British Library (London), the Institute of Islamic Culture (Paris), Vicki Myhren Gallery (Denver), the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), Maquis Projects, (Izmir), Trankat (Tétouan, Morocco), Sol Koffler Gallery (Providence), Artellewa (Cairo), and Sanat Limani (Istanbul), Farooq received several awards from The Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and the Europe Media Fund, as well the President’s Scholarship at the Rhode Island School of Design. Reviews and essays dedicated to his work have been included in C Magazine, The Washington Post, BBC Culture, Hyperallergic, Artnet, The Huffington Post, Canadian Art, and others. He also appeared on the 2018 Sobey Art Award long list, Canada’s preeminent art award.
